Biblical & Scientific Ways To Increase Your Happiness – November 9, 2015
Hebrews 12:1, Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2fixing our eyes on Jesus, the Pioneer and Perfecter of faith. For the joy set before Him He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
I recently read an article titled Scientifically Proven Ways to Increase your Happiness. The first suggestion from the article was to practice mindfulness or in other words, pay attention. In a recent study, a Harvard psychologist contacted 2,250 participants at random intervals during the day to find out what activities they were engaged in at the moment and their thoughts and feelings about their tasks. The results were pretty startling, those who were paying attention and concentrating on the task at hand were happier than those who were simply daydreaming or not paying attention.
The take away for you today is, pay attention to what you are doing. Focus on the task at hand and the people around you. However, I know that some of you right now feel alone, and you do not have anyone or anywhere to focus. If that is you, focus on Jesus. The Bible says in Hebrews 12:1, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the Pioneer and Perfecter of faith…”
This verse mentions 2 areas that can and will blur our focus- things that hinder and sin that entangles us. It is easy to say, “focus on Jesus,” but it is often difficult to ignore hinderances and sin. What is hindering your focus today? What sin is taking up more mental space than your walk with Christ? Clearly Christ wants us to “throw off” that stuff and persevere. (Persist, continue, carry on, go on, keep on, keep going, struggle on, hammer away, be determined, follow something through, keep at it, press on/ahead, not take no for an answer, be tenacious, stand one’s ground, stand fast/firm, hold on, go the distance, stay the course, plod on, stop at nothing, leave no stone unturned, plug away, stick to one’s guns, stick it out, hang in there. ANTONYMS give up)
Don’t give up today; practice mindfulness and pay attention today; This will help you stay focused, and staying focused will improve your happiness and help you avoid areas that will slow you down in life… persevere.
Think about it, and have a great day!
