Memorial Day – May 30, 2016
John 8:36, So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
Memorial Day is the annual American holiday which marks the beginning of summer and will be celebrated with lake outings, BBQ’s and fun family get-togethers. But the true meaning and origins of Memorial Day are anything but a celebration. It is a day to remember those Americans who gave their lives as members of our Armed Forces while serving to protect the nation.
Memorial Day is even better understood when we understand the sacrifice of Christ, who went into the battlefield of humanity, knowing that His life would be demanded of Him. Because of His giving of Himself through death on the cross, all who call on His name may live in freedom from the penalty of sin and liberty from its eternal consequences. Jesus explained spiritual freedom in John 8:36, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
This Memorial Day, let us reflect upon the great sacrifices of those in uniform who gave their lives for our national freedom, and let us also remember the supreme sacrifice of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
