Tongue Is Deadly Poison – April 28, 2016

James 3:7, All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, 8but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

Proverbs 18:21, The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

Proverbs 16:24, Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.

This week’s focus for both my blogs and radio spots examine what James, the brother of Jesus, says about our tongue. Today’s topic reminds us that the tongue is filled with DEADLY POISON.  James says, All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, 8but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

The black mamba is probably the most deadly snake in the world only taking about two drops of its deadly venom to kill a human. What makes the black mamba even more terrifying is its speed. It can reach 14’ long and is as skinny as a pool cue, which allows it to travel at speeds up to 12 miles an hour. Before the advent of anti-venoms, black mamba bites were almost 100% fatal.  James says our tongues are the same way. He does not just say our tongues are full of poison, he actually says our tongues are full of “deadly poison.” Which means if we are not careful, our tongues can kill our relationships, marriages, kids or even our careers. James also tells us that our tongue is a restless evil, meaning it just can’t sit still and leave well enough alone. The tongue desires to strike, we have to constantly be in prayer for self-control of our words.

Consider the alternative, Proverbs 16:24, Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.  We would all do well today to heed James’s words. What will you choose today gracious words that heal or harsh ones that act as deadly poison? Try to keep it in check today.

Think about it…and have a blessed day!
