Number One – February 29, 2016

Deuteronomy 6:4, Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.

Isaiah 44:6, This is what the Lord says— Israel’s King and Redeemer, the Lord Almighty: I am the first and I am the last; apart from Me there is no God.

People often ask me about numbers in the Bible. Numbers in the Bible do mean or represent certain things. It should also be noted that over the years, many people have tried to make too much out of every number in the Bible. Sometimes in the Bible, numbers are just numbers or historical facts. However, there are a few numbers in the Bible that have significant meaning.

One number of significance in Scripture is the number one. The number one in the Bible denotes absoluteness. In particular, it speaks to God’s absolute singleness. In the Old Testament the Bible says, “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.” In the New Testament, Jesus said the Father and I are One.

In our crazy world, we are too often drawn away from worshipping the one true God. If we aren’t careful, we can worship our possessions, our careers, our favorite teams, or even Hollywood personalities. However, none of those are worthy of our ultimate worship. The only one of importance is the One true God.   So, if or when you see, hear, or say the number one today remember its Biblical significance. It speaks to the absoluteness of God. After all, He truly is the Number 1.

Think about it…and have a blessed day!
