Drop In The Bucket – November 7, 2016
Isaiah 40:15, Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket; they are regarded as dust on the scales; He weighs the islands as though they were fine dust.
There are 5 common phrases used today that most people don’t realize originated in the Bible. You have heard the phrase “A drop in a bucket!” Yes, that one comes from the Bible. In the Old Testament, the children of Israel were surrounded by mighty nations that were constantly conquering them because the Israelites failed to follow God faithfully. In midst of the difficult days and fear of their powerful enemies, the Prophet Isaiah spoke these words of comfort to the children of Israel. He said, “Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket; they are regarded as dust on the scales…” to God.
Did you read those words? Isaiah was telling Israel that even the most powerful enemies it faced were nothing more than a drop in the bucket compared to the awesomeness of God’s power. He said those nations were nothing more than, “dust on the scales” that are of no weighty significance. That is still true today for those who faithfully follow God. A tremendous trial or enemy is nothing more than a drop in the bucket compared to God’s power and weighs less than dust on a scale. What great figurative language to help us put our struggles in perspective. Whatever you are going through today, God’s power is greater! Drop that in your bucket.
Think about it, and have a blessed day!
