To Conquer Death – December 17, 2015

1 Corinthians 15:55, “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” 56The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Christmas is God’s victory over our ultimate earthly enemy, death. Read these words from 1 Corinthians 15:55, “’Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?’ 56The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Did you get that? Christmas is God’s victory over death. You might think, “Wait a minute, I thought Christmas was about a birth, more specifically the birth of God’s son named Jesus,” and you’re right! However, we can’t forget that Jesus was born with a purpose, and that purpose was not so we would think of Jesus as a little child in a manger, but that He was a child who was born and would ultimately die on a cross. Don’t stop there because Christmas isn’t just about us remembering Christ on a cross either. After He died on that cross, He was placed in a tomb, and on the third day, He arose and the tomb was empty.

Christmas, rightly spoken of, is about a cradle, a cross and an empty tomb. It is the empty tomb that allows us to say, “…thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Think about it, and have a Merry Christmas!
