1 Samuel 16:7, But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

A homely couple showed up at Harvard University without an appointment requesting to speak to the president. After being ignored all day, the couple was finally granted a few short minutes with the man. The wife explained that they had a son who attended Harvard for 1 year, but was accidentally killed, and that she and her husband would like to donate a building to honor him, somewhere on campus. The president rolled his eyes. He glanced at their clothes, and then exclaimed, “A building! Do you have any earthly idea how much a building costs? We have over seven and a half million dollars in the physical plant at Harvard.” The president was pleased with his response, hoping to get rid of them quickly. The lady then turned to her husband and said quietly, “Is that all it costs to start a University? Why don’t we just start our own?” Her husband nodded as the president’s face wilted in confusion and bewilderment. Mr. and Mrs. Leland Stanford walked away, traveling back to Palo Alto, California where they established the University that bears their name, a memorial to a son that Harvard no longer cared about!

1 Samuel 16:7 tells the story of God choosing Israel’s next king, But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” What a great reminder that every person is created in the image of God, and worthy of love and respect.

Have a blessed day!
