Having A Day Of Rest – July 20, 2016

Matthew 6:26, Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?

In the midst of the summer season, often times we find ourselves controlled by busy schedules. We experience 40-hour work weeks, summer travels, soccer practices, and often we are unable to remember the last time we allowed ourselves to rest. One word that definitely characterizes our society is busyness. The more events, lunches and practices we attend the more celebrated we feel. It is regarded as lazy to retreat from our busy schedules to have a day of rest.

We have to fight against this concept of celebrated hectic schedules. Instead, we need to find ourselves retreating and finding rest in the Lord. Rest can be found in the Lord because He is the one that sustains and upholds us. God has commanded us to rest so we can remind ourselves that the Lord is creator and sustainer. In Matthew 6, Jesus tells us, “Look at the birds…”, reminding us that God is their provider, and far more than the birds, God is our provider. Therefore, we can retreat from the busyness and anxieties of our daily schedules and together rest in our gracious Lord.

I want to encourage you this week to make time to retreat; put down your calendar, and rest in our providing and sustaining God.

Have a great week,

Jake Heenehan
