Recently, a family from Woodstock, Georgia posted an advertisement in Craigslist saying, “Fairly large, free yard sale. Moving and we want everything to go for FREE. So come over and take whatever you want and how much you want.”

As you might imagine, that is exactly what people did. The next day a crowd of people came over and took everything, and I mean everything. Ignoring the instructions of the owners that only what was in the front yard was free and disregarding attempts of the family to keep people out of its home, the yard sale attendees did what the ad said and took as much as they wanted, both inside and outside the house.

After losing most of their possessions in the frantic raid, the Woodstock family is sorry for the confusing “ad” and asking for the unintended items to be returned.

As I thought about that story, I was reminded that there really is not much in life that is TOTALLY FREE…and when most people tell us something is free there is usually a catch.

Perhaps the greatest statement of something being totally free was made by the Apostle Paul in one of my favorite Bible verses that says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves it is the “Free Gift” of God”(Eph. 2:8-9)

So, while not much in this life is really free, God’s grace and love are totally, simply and absolutely FREE.  No catches, recalls or strings attached.  You just have to accept the gift.

Think about it and have a great day!
