Romans 13:7, Give to everyone what you owe them…if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.
Yesterday was Memorial Day; this day is meaningful to me in a special way. Both of my grandfathers fought in and survived World War II. Although Memorial Day isn’t technically for them, the loss and sacrifice of many of their friends fighting at their sides tremendously impacted them, and ultimately, their children and grandchildren.
My parents observed how both of their fathers sacrificed their livelihoods and precious time with family. The witnessed the willingness that these men had to potentially lay down their lives for freedom. However, they did not just observe, they participated. My father’s family had to move in with his grandparents, and a screened-in porch became his bedroom. My mother endured many formative years of childhood without her dad around. Of course, their experiences are eclipsed by those whose dads never came home, whose fathers did give the ultimate sacrifice. Romans 13:7 says in part, “Give to everyone what you owe them: … if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.”
Throughout this week, let’s continue to give respect and honor to those whose sacrifices made our freedoms possible.
