First Time Parents – September 6, 2016

Romans 5:3, …we can rejoice in our problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop perseverance, and perseverance develops character.

As a parent and a grandparent, I know how difficult the job of parenting is. I love watching first-time parents, while remembering my wife and I with our first child. We wanted to protect her from everything. We were rather uptight about almost everything with our first child. But, we learned to relax some as our third went through the process. I recently read a humorous summary of this progression that says:

‘When the first child eats dirt. The parent calls the doctor immediately.
Second child eats dirt. Parent cleans out his mouth.
Third child eats dirt. Parents wonder if they really need to feed him lunch.’

It’s not that we loved our third child less, but we learned from experience that problems are part of life and growth, and that most won’t hurt us. The Bible teaches in Romans 5 that “we can rejoice in our problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop perseverance, and perseverance develops character.” Allowing our children to experience adversity today is part of preparing them for life as healthy adults tomorrow.

Have a great day!
