God Is Working Despite The Brokenness – March 21, 2017
Romans 8:28, And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.
This week, I’d like to provide a little more Biblical insight to some of the most common verses of Scripture we may hear thrown into a conversation or may even see on a coffee cup. Today’s verse is Romans 8:28, “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.” I love this verse. There have been many instances in my life, or in counseling others, where this verse has been a great comfort. Sometimes bad things happen. Often, they are issues that are beyond our control, and there is an assurance in the verse that God not only knows the problem exists, but is working for His purposes.
To understand this passage further, we have to remember that the context is discussing persecution, suffering and weaknesses associated with believers living in a fallen world. Further, Paul explicitly says that this passage applies to “those who love God.” This is not some general love of a big man upstairs, but this is a love of God rooted in salvation that only comes from Jesus Christ. This passage doesn’t advocate sin or offer a blanket hope, but instead provides assurance for believers that God is working despite the brokenness in the world. Where do you put your hope when bad things happen?
Think about it and have a great day.
