15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through Him and for Him. 17 He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. Colossians 1:15-17

Did you catch that? Jesus wasn’t just hanging out with God in the beginning; Jesus is the Creator of everything! This goes hand in hand with John 1:3. On top of that, everything was created for Him as well. Jesus is the glue that holds all of creation together. Without Jesus, everything falls apart. Without Jesus, the world spirals out of control. Without Jesus, there is no order. Without Jesus, there is no love. Without Jesus, there is no hope. Without Jesus, there is nothing. When Paul wrote that Jesus was the firstborn over all creation, he wasn’t inferring that Jesus came to be at some point and was just the first thing God created. Jesus has preeminence, supremacy, and priority over everything in creation. He is number one in everything, and everyone (eventually) bows at His feet.
