18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20

This is our mission as followers of Christ. It’s the Great Commission. Hopefully for you this is one of the most familiar passages in the entire Bible. But, what is the pivotal element to making all of this happen?

Verse 18 tells us that Jesus came near and spoke to them.   That is expressing not just the physical proximity of Jesus to His disciples, but a relational intimacy that helped them know their sins were forgiven and that He trusted them to be up to this task of spreading the gospel. His words to them reveal the pivotal key in accomplishing the Great Commission—all authority on heaven and earth belongs to Jesus! Jesus is pivotal to our mission because He is our leader and He sent us but also He is in charge. It’s like flipping to the last page in the book and finding out everything that is going to happen. Jesus wins. Jesus rules. Jesus is supreme. Jesus is everything. Jesus is the Lord! That’s the pivotal truth of everything. Jesus is Lord!
