Be Strong And Courageous – March 24, 2017
Joshua 1:9, Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.
This week, I’d like to provide a little more Biblical insight to some of the most common verses of Scripture we may hear thrown into a conversation or may even see on a coffee cup. Today’s verse is Joshua 1:9, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” The context of this passage helps us understand why God is saying this to Joshua. God’s people have fled Egypt, witnessed the plagues, survived the Death Angel, experienced the parting of the Red Sea, disobeyed God’s promise to enter into the land that God had chosen for them, and they have been wandering in the desert for an entire generation.
Now, they are standing at the brink of entering the Promised Land again, knowing that there will be war, and that other nations will challenge them, and the Lord looks to His people’s leader and tells him to have courage and to know that He is with them. How great is that! God is making good on a several hundred-year old promise, and all they have to do is step out in faith knowing that God is a promise keeper and sustainer. God’s character never changes. He has been and always will be faithful. Rather than simply seeing this passage as a call to be courageous, may we also see this passage as a call to worship the faithful God we serve.
Think about it and have a great weekend!
