Tongue Is A Fire – April 27, 2016
James 3:5, Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.
Ephesians 4:29, Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
Proverbs 13:3, Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin.
This week we’ve been examining what James, the brother of Jesus, says about our tongue. James tells us that our tongue is a small fire that is capable of burning down a great forest. James 3:5, “… the tongue is a small part of the body…Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.” Our tongues, though very small, can be amazingly destructive in the same way a small fire can destroy an entire forest.
In an interview one time, famed vocalist Mariah Carey said, “I can hear a thousand praises and one criticism, and the one criticism will erase the thousand praises.” When I heard that quote, I thought of this verse. The praises we hear in our lives are like the trees in a forest, but just one critical or harsh word is like a flame that burns down the forest of praises. The Bible also puts it this way, “Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin” (Proverbs 13:3). So, guard your lips today and save the forest of praise. Now that’s good for the environment!
Think about it and have a blessed day!
