Psalm 46:1, God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

I recently ran across a list of the top 5 most-searched Bible verses that come from the Psalms. The Psalms are a collection of 150 different psalms, songs or prayers that are categorized by genre. The 5th most-searched verse from the Psalms is Psalms 46:1, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”  It’s pretty clear why that made the top of the list.

When the Psalms were originally written, everyone was an agrarian, or a farmer. When they were attacked, the only thing they could do was retreat to the city or fortress. That Psalm tells us first that God is our refuge. For the Psalmist, a refuge was a fortress or high tower that he can run to for safety.

This passage also tells us that God is our strength when we are weak or defenseless. That last phrase, God is an ever-present help in trouble. In those days, enemies did not announce that they were about to attack. No, the enemy just showed up, and immediate assistance was needed. So, wherever you find yourself today, don’t forget that God is YOUR refuge and yoYOUR strength, and He is YOUR ever-present help in times of trouble.”

Take care and have a blessed day!
